20 Storytelling Tips to Help You Score Points with Leaders from the First Slide

November 3, 2025 at 1:47:59 AM

📌 Bookmark now: 20 principles encapsulate more than 10 years of experience in dashboard design & data presentation below.

You'll learn how to turn dry numbers into stories that get leaders to buy into your idea in 30 seconds — no extra slides needed.

PART 1 · STORY MINDSET – “Storytelling” before “charting”

⤷ Speak "business language"

Instead of “RMSE = 0.86”, write: “The model accurately forecasts 86% of revenue.” ⤷ The CFO understands immediately, without needing your explanation.

⤷ 3-Act Frame Construction (ARC Framework)

Context → Conflict → Solution Example: “GMV growth slows (Context), CPC increased by 40% (Conflict), shift 20% of budget to Affiliate (Solution)”.

⤷ “Big Numbers” – up to 3 numbers

Shorten: “25M” instead of “25,432,987 USD” → Add small sparklines under each number.

⤷ Chart title = question

“Which channel is most profitable?” → is much more attractive than “ROI by Channel 2024”.

PART 2 · VISUAL DESIGN – Eyes see, brain understands

3S Rule: Select • Simplify • Signal

• Select: choose the simplest chart to answer the question

• Simplify: remove grid, redundant legend, and repeated labels

• Signal: use color, captions, and effects to emphasize key points

Few colors = Clear meaning

⤷ Limit 4–5 colors.

⤷ Use dark/light tones instead of flashy ones.

Colors control emotions

• Orange = Urgent

• Green = Trust

• Red = Warning

→ Good news → green/gray · Risk → red/orange

The Three Pillars of Great Charting

Correct type (line = trend, bar = comparison)

Streamline (residue ink)

Create layers (combine bar + line, add annotation)

PART 3 · DASHBOARD & CONTEXT – Right person, right time

Dashboard needs an “owner”

⤷ Clear responsibilities + regular review schedule (Leadership Weekly, Ops Daily)

If forced to use a board, still have to tell a story

• Bold the main row/column

• Abbreviate units (k, M, %)

• Fixed header

Don't let anyone ask, “What does this number mean?”

⤷ Add 1 line description next to chart

⤷ Provide filter + user manual

There is no perfect dashboard

⤷ See dashboard as a compass → Launch early · Continuous improvement

There are always 2 versions

• Executive Snapshot (<30s)

• Detail Drill-down for in-depth

PART 4 · PRESENTATION & PERSUASION – Bringing data “live” outside the meeting room

Slide ≠ Email

⤷ Slide = billboard → large letters, few words

⤷ New email/Appendix containing details

Always be prepared for questions:

“Where does this number come from?” → Sub-slides: model, lineage, KPI, source

8 data presentation skills

Purpose · Audience · Focus · Energy · Structure · Story · Practice · Feedback

10 online presentation survival tips:

• Standard lighting

• Compact background

• Clear microphone

• Turn off notifications

• Look at the camera

• Test carefully before the session

Attaching emotion to data

Mortality chart + patient story → Calling for blood donations is 10 times more effective

60-second summary

⤷ Problem → Insight → Action

⤷ Practice in front of a mirror with a stopwatch

Opening the lesson "opens the ears"

Start with a shocking statistic , a short story, or a big question → Never start with: “Here is a graph…”

4 QUICK-CHECK steps before clicking “SEND”

  1. Write the ARC framework on paper, making sure each chart is in the correct “round”

  2. Review each chart with the 3S rule

  3. Practice speaking a 60s summary in front of a mirror

  4. Ask a colleague to read your slide. If they ask less than 3 “What does this number mean?” questions, you’re good!
