Financial analysis framework & foundational knowledge

Financial data analysis techniques

A system of 10 core financial analysis technique groups, covering areas from data reliability and control to performance, risk, and operational analysis (confidential).

Session 3

Fundamental financial mechanisms/principles

A system of financial mechanisms and principles: the foundation for applying the 10 groups of financial analysis techniques in Session 2 (confidential). 1. Establishing a solid financial foundation before analysis: all management reports must be traceable back to source data to ensure reliability and credibility. 2. Developing an economic-substance mindset: understanding the underlying economics of transactions rather than merely following accounting formats or templates. 3. Correctly applying revenue and expense recognition principles by period to avoid profit illusions and flawed decision-making. 4. Viewing financial performance beyond profit and loss, incorporating cash flow and working capital to prevent growth without sufficient operating liquidity. 5. Expanding the cost perspective through Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to enable long-term optimal decisions instead of short-term cost cutting.

Dashboard systems and data sources in financial analysis.

1. Understanding why financial data visualization is critical in enabling leaders to make fast and accurate decisions. 2. Distinguishing three types of financial dashboards by purpose: operational monitoring, performance analysis, and strategic decision support. 3. Identifying financial data sources within the organization and understanding how to connect them into a unified, end-to-end view. 4. Knowing how to select and use the right chart types for each type of financial analysis to avoid data misinterpretation. 5. Reviewing the complete financial analysis process before presenting data on dashboards. 6. Practicing data preparation to ensure readiness for subsequent analysis and dashboard-building sessions.

Practical Application of Visualizing the Balance Sheet (BS) and Performance Analysis Report (PnL)

1. Hands-on practice: building a Balance Sheet in Power BI - Asset structure: total assets, current assets, non-current assets - Capital structure: equity and liabilities, current liabilities, long-term liabilities, capital-to-asset structure, Debt-to-Assets Ratio (DAR) 2. Hands-on practice: building a profit analysis report in Power BI - Business metrics: revenue, cost of goods sold (COGS), operating expenses, depreciation - Financial metrics: interest expense, taxes, profit after tax, earnings before interest - Profitability metrics: gross margin, operating margin, ROA, ROE

Practical Guide to Visualizing Cash Flow (CF) Reports

1. Overview of the components of the Cash Flow Analysis Report and hands-on visualization of each cash flow category by operating nature - Cash Flow from Operating Activities (CFO) - Cash Flow from Investing Activities (CFI) - Cash Flow from Financing Activities (CFF) 2. Hands-on practice: visualizing cash flow components and cash flow reports - Accounts Receivable (AR) reports - Accounts Payable (AP) reports 3. From reporting to cash flow movement analysis using two methods - Direct Method - Indirect Method

Session 7

Practice visualizing strategic reports, linking financial indicators to present to the CFO.

1. Hands-on practice: visualizing strategic reports - How to analyze and measure changes over time, compare variances against the original budget, and identify linkages between financial metrics. 2. Hands-on practice: creating a one-page Executive Summary and Management Dashboard - How to select the essential financial metrics for management reporting. - How to design dashboards that clearly communicate financial insights for the CFO and senior leadership.

Session 8

Practice advanced financial analysis with a specific case study.

PVM, Sensitivity, and What-If Analysis 1. Decoding the paradox of “revenue growth without profit growth” using Price–Volume–Mix (PVM) analysis to properly assess the quality of growth. 2. Identifying the trap of volume-driven growth that erodes profitability and detecting risks from shifts in product mix, sales channels, or market structure. 3. Applying sensitivity analysis to evaluate the impact of changes in price, costs, exchange rates, and other key variables before risks materialize.

Leverage Actionable Insights and tell stories with data.

1. Connecting analytical thinking with dashboard systems to uncover actionable insights and tell compelling data-driven stories. 2. Hands-on practice and live demonstrations based on real-world use cases

Session 10

Final Project (Finance Analytics Capstone Project)

Learners complete a capstone project, designing an Operational Finance Analytics system and building a Business Tree to connect and structure analytical thinking.
